Master the Art of Bengali Saree Draping: A Timeless Tradition

Step 1: Prepare Yourself and the Saree

Bengali Saree Draping: Before you begin, make sure you have the following items ready:

A Bengali Saree Draping (typically around 5 to 6 yards long)
A well-fitted blouse that complements the saree
A matching petticoat (underskirt)
Safety pins
A waistband or a saree belt (optional)

Step 2: Wear the Petticoat and Blouse

First, put on the petticoat and blouse. Ensure that the length of the petticoat reaches your ankles. Then, make sure the blouse fits snugly and adjust the sleeve length according to your preference.

Step 3: Start Tucking the Saree

Hold the saree with the inner (plain) side facing up and the decorative border facing down. Start tucking the top edge of the saree into the petticoat at the center, just above your navel. Make sure to keep the saree taut as you tuck it in to create neat pleats.

Step 4: Create Pleats

Now, take about 6-7 inches of the saree from the tucked-in portion and pleat it neatly in the front, towards your right side. Bengali sarees are known for their broad pleats, so take your time to make them even and well-defined. Make around 5-7 pleats and ensure they face towards your right.

Step 5: Arrange the Pallu

The remaining portion of the saree is the pallu (the loose end). Bring the pallu over your left shoulder from the back and let it fall gracefully over your left arm. Bengali sarees often have a thick border, so make sure the pallu is draped to display this distinctive feature.

Step 6: Secure the Pallu

To keep the pallu in place, you can use safety pins to pin it to your blouse near your left shoulder. This will prevent it from slipping off while you move.

Step 7: Arrange the Pleats

Arrange the pleats that you created earlier so they fall gracefully over the front of the petticoat. The pleats should be well-aligned and slightly towards the left side of your waist.

Step 8: Tuck the Pleats

Carefully tuck the pleats of the pallu and place them on your left shoulder, Ensure they are secure and do not come undone.
